LinkFirst things first, value is the relationship between light and dark .
Learning how both of those react to each other is the most important part of learning how to value

LinkI really don’t want to go to deep into because then this will become thousands of paragraphs but to get the gist of learning how to understand value is finding out where the terminator is. The terminator is exact point of where light ends and dark begins.

LinkLook back to the apple on the right, the light is shining on one side while the other side gets none, the exact point of where the dark shows and the light doesn’t, follows the shape of the fruit. By mapping out the exact location of where it becomes dark it makes things a lot easier to shade and add depth to it.

Link Now the hard part is separating the median from the hard shadows. A lot of people get the light shadows mixed up with the dark shadows, and then everything becomes muddy and dull. If you were to pull up a picture of an apple or a ball, the part of it that doesn’t have extreme darkness would be the median. For example, what I drew on the Apple, the unshaded part that isn’t the hard light is the median. Comedian is what gradients into the light or a.k.a. the light source.

LinkBut anyways how to practice this is to try out an Japanese art concept called notan
It’s a art style that consists of drawing the hard shadows on an object, leaving the out print of the object, I can draw a example later but that’s the idea.
