The people thistle view as family don't view him as family or are dead. He's cursed to live longer than everyone he loves just because he's an elf. Because of this he curses them all to live forever. He can't live without knowing someone out there he holds dear is gone, and latches onto any love people give him because of that. Idk that's how I see it at least.
