Marcos searched the bookstore, running his finger over the smooth spines of the books. He's looking for a certain book, HER book.
Amalia walked in, stumbling over her own feet. There were rope marks around her neck, and rashes on her arms.
She went and sat down, and starting drawing on a sheet of paper.

Marcos glanced at the newcomer, then saw her wounds. His eyes widened. He knew too well what they were.
Suddenly, he felt sick. He turned the corner and hunched over, holding his stomach

He looks down, clenching his eyes
"Its fine,," he says in a near whisper
He does his best not to look up at her. It hurts.
"Im fine,, it's all fine." He stands up. "....are you fine,,?"
"...could be worse."
She scratches her neck, prepared for a burst of yelling.
Marcos smiles a little, remembering something SHE said once. "If you could be worse, then you could also be better.."
"I-- thank you.."
She smiles
"What book are you looking for? I could help-"
"Uh, uhmm,,"
He clears his throat
"Les Miserábles?.... By Victor Hugo?"
"Oh!! It's over th-"
She's cut off as she stares at a girl who's reading a book in the corner

"Thanks, Amalia. I, uhm, I hope things go well with your crush, or uh, whatever that whole thing was...." he trails off

She coughs, and fingers the small scar on her arm
"sorta..sorry for misunderstanding,,"
She runs her fingers along the books
"this place was like a home to me. Ever read Alice in wonderland?"
She chuckles
He lets out a chuckle
"Yeah, yeah of course. Had to for elementary school.... i hated the cartoon,,"
"I loved that old book. I used to drag my--"
She paused
"well, I used to pretend I was Alice. It was the only way to block out the yelling."
She glanced at the scar again
Marcos caught what she was looking at, and tugged on his own sleeves.
"I.... Im sorry,,"
"no no no please don't be sorry its not your fault-"
She smiles gently, but sadly
"its not your fault. Don't be sorry for something you didn't cause."
He grips the book
"I wish i could help,, you almost d.. I wanna help,, you seem so sweet,,"
"its ok. Thanks for offering. Its only because of her that I choose to untie myself."
She scratches her neck, leaving red marks
"....her,,"
He squeezes his eyes shut, then smiles
"Yeah,, thats why i unties myself too,,"

She starts to cry, and suddenly hugs Marcos
"im so sorry.. I didn't know.."
He hugs back, softly sobbing
"Its okay.. its okay.."
He pulls back and smiles at her sadly
"We both have someone to live for,, maybe theyll teach us how to live for ourselves, too,,"

She wipes a tear from his face
"your smart.. Thank you."
She scratches her neck
"would you--if you don't mind--would you happen to have a place to stay for the night..? Im not welcome at home,, and I can't sleep at the bar again,"
He notices her scratching

He trails off, reaches into his bag, and pulls out a thick, rubber bracelet, with a rough texture on the outside and soft things on the inside
"Here,, try to start scratching that instead, its better for you,,"
"Oh! I, uh. Yeah, yeah i could. You'll just have to not mind my sister,, okay?"
"thank you.. For both of these things. I appreciate it. And I won't."
She scratches the braclet
He smiles, then goes to the counter

Brie reads the room, does a quick evaluation of everyone, and her eyes widen a bit.
"Amalia. Such a pretty name.... can i get you anything to eat?"
