It really seems like a lot of people give independant games too much credit. Like, it's amazing that a small team, even as small as one person, can make these games, but people take the credit due too far. they say the writing and gameplay are better than AAA published games and stuff. I'll give examples in this thread.

Undertale, for example. I haven't played it or even seen a full walkhrough, so take this with a grain of salt, but the game seems a pretty generic RPG, the heart dodging missiles thing seems like something that's been done befor, and the mercy/pacifist vs Genocide runs are kind of par for the couyrse. The whole philosophical thing about not hurting people or whatever seems kind of poorly thought out, especially since the game itself is largely a parody of RPG tropes, as well as jokey throughout, so the fact that if you play it as you would a regular game you get the neutral/worst ending is kind of retarded. then there's the fact that to get the full story you need to play through different runs in different orders on different save files. it's just overdone in my opinion.

FNAF gets a bunch of praise for it's rvolutionary backstory and stuff. The first game was just a compliation of jumpscares. the setting is a business after hours, in the dark (AKA basic scary place that take no time to actually set up suspense) and you just play through with the possibility of jumpscares. Every other game is the exact same. the only difference is the clues to the backstory. Clues that, if you put them together, do not fully line up. And they basically just say "a spooky man killed kids, but the kids ghosts came back and are now bad, but not really" It's not very original, and relies on common, overused settings that everyone thinks of as scary. it's not trying to push the boundaries, it's just redoing exactly what's been done.

Baldi's basic's. Very apt title. It was made in a very tight deadline, but it's still kind of shit. It jumps into the maths questions that are impossible way to quickly. it should have a longer wait until you get those, probably with them getting harder first. Ironically, it's okay. It's almost a parody of an indy game. However, people treat it like every other indy game. "It scared me a bit, so it's a really scary horror game" Baldi is and always was an overused, unfunny meme.

These are the kind of indy games everyone points to and either says they're the best, or says they are the worst because of the fans. I have only seen legit reviews of undertale, and only like three. the rest either get a pass because they're indy, or the dislike it pointed at the fans.
