Ever's soul was guarded by his papyrus before he disappeared so before he disappeared he put magic on it and it guards it, however every time someone breaks his heart (metaphorically) or hurts him physically it slowly chips away pieces of his souls protectors, which the blackness of the void will finally corrupt him leaving him as dust.
