guidelines? like sketches? If you mean sketches then I just draw what I want the finished drawing to sort of look like without bothering about it being neat, like some of my sketches you can't even tell whats what but somehow I make sense of the mess when I outline
I use the pencil for line art and the thickness depends on if I want to make ti super detailed or not, if I just want it normal and I use the one before the smallest one but if I want it extr e m ely detailed I use the smallest one.
I choose the colours that I think will look nice with each other also the colours that are opposite each other on the colour wheel or next to each other, because those look nice together. Also I choose the colours depending on what I'm drawing, for example trees in a forest, If I want to make sure the background doesn't stand out too much I make the trunks of the trees green and slowly fade out to lighter colours so they can sort of blend in with the background, then I use the paint roller a lot for l i g h t effects

also if you don't like the colour of the things in your background you can alter the colour slightly with the paint roller, like for example when I was drawing the trees in the forest I realised at the end that the forest wasn't green enough so I just went over the whole slide with slightly greenish grey paint roller. which made the whole thing a bit more green.
