The paint roller tool. If you just use different shades of grey it darkens/lightens the color. Make sure it's actual grey, the greys on the pallette have a bit of blue in them. If you use a shade that's closer to white then it will brighten the color, if you use a shade closer to black it will darken. The closer it is to white/black the more dramatic the color with lighten/darken.
