Well, likes are the way on this site that people show that you are accepted, that people think your art is good, that you're a part of the ingroup. Many teenagers and preteens desire acceptance from their peers, and likes represent acceptance in some form here. Therefore, teenagers (the main user base of this site) value likes to the point of letting it effect their mental state because they desire to have a status symbol and be a part of the in group.
