How I do it.

LinkSo, for the idea, I usually take something and make it weird, so for this I took a CRT TV with rabbit ears, then thought, maybe if it were walking,, so the TV stand's legs would look like bug legs. Then, obviously, it has to have a face in the screen. I added dials to make it more 60's retro.
So my "construction" I use blue lines so I can more easily distinguish from the next part, then I just draw the idea in it's basic form, where the different parts are and such. I'll often toy around with ideas as I'm drawing, you can see some unerased lines from a version with the legs connected by bars.
I then switch to a darker colour for the "sketch" where I finalize my ideas and get it looking okay. They'll be a bit sloppy, but they need to be usable for the next part.
Lineart, thinner brush, pure black. I'll go for straighter and more confident lines, and try and connect it all.
For colouring, I copy the lineart frame, then use the fill tool. If needed, I'll block holes in the lineart with dots of colour

LinkThen I'll copy the lineart frame and paste it over the coloured frame, in order the keep the lineart looking consistent. This also makes it a little thicker.
