Oh- I used a grey background (white/black won't work) and I used the paint roller tool. It takes FOREVER for it to get to what you want, but it gets better once you get the hang of it.
Also, the paint roller allows for cool effects, but be careful once you get to darker shades. Once that happens, you won't be able to go over it with lighter colors. :0
