You'll understand later, it's all part of the lore. Basically, he encounters someone like him from a proud family of assassins.

He gets his ass beaten, and then to rub it in, his face is slammed into the ground repeatedly, but then he stands back up, looking... different. He takes on a new form, his body is a dark red, he no longer looks human, this is known as the "Advancement." Or "Ascension." It's a form where his body is able to exert far more force and speed than any normal person, at a deadly cost. The "Advancement" slowly destroys its user. His father is also able to use this ability, but he refrains from it.
