I sort of think it’s just been a thing people have always done to copy things. Like teaching little kids how to write letters. I also like to think people (usually little kids) trace to help understand how things were drawn whether they know it or not. I’m not supporting tracing at all btw but I will say that sometimes people should be nicer to people that trace and help lead them away from art theft and tracing instead of just swearing at them
