Desmond Thomas Doss was not a hero people would expect. He would join the military on April fools 1942. Doss was born on February 7th, 1919 in Lynchburg. He was raised to be known as a strict Seventh Day Adventist. He would leave school at 8th grade and soon start making money. After that, Doss met his future wife, Dorothy Pauline Schutte. Doss decided to serve his country and join the military. Because of Doss's religious beliefs, he strictly observed the 6th commandment, "Thou shalt not kill," he decided to save lives instead of taking them. Doss in the battlefield that took place in Okinawa on an approximately 30 foot tall rock named 'The Maeda Escarpment' (Which the Americans would later nickname 'Hacksaw Ridge') was accepted as a medic that wouldn't take lives and rest on Saturday (The Sabbath) which was eminent to the second coming of Jesus Christ according to Adventist beliefs. Desmond Doss now starts his journey on saving lives.
