use distinct shapes on a simple, memorable design. try to pick one main color, chose one or two colors similar to it, and then choose one or two complimentary colors to make it pop. refrain from complicated or overly specific designs.

You want to create sonething that's easy for you to draw multiple times. I suggest using simple fur/scale/feather patterns and colors that are relatively easy to pick (3 colors at max typically). I would also try to exaggerate features about you into it. For me, I'm tough, so my fursona has an armadillo shell. Let your fursona symbolize you.
