LinkActually I don’t remember half of what I made up I had to mercy kill a bug. I have to sleep soon.
Mermaids are known to be one of the most whimsical and blissful creatures, sanguine no matter the situation. The only reason being that they keep away from humans, the species that only birth misery to those around them and even to themselves. Infecting every other species with their way of thinking.
Only the leaders of the merfolk know this and keep it from their subjects which I dunno..might be a bad choice tbh. But then again merfolk live so far out and deep they hardly or never learn about the existence of humans.

LinkIf they ever come into contact with a human and take on their way of thinking which they are very prone to they’ll start becoming more human like. First the thoughts, then they’ll slowly lose their scales. While that’s happening it’ll gradually get harder to breathe under water and in the later half they’ll have to spend more time in the upper zones of the sea until they’re forced to remain on land.
By that time you’ve pretty much got legs or smth. Kinda scaly legs but it’ll be nothing but skin eventually.

LinkThey can have a tail and return to the ocean again but it’s near impossible to achieve. You have to regain your same whimsy and outlook on life you’ve had in the past which you can’t really depending on your experiences and how grim the realities of life are. So you’re stuck fantasizing about a world you’re no longer apart of until you’ve fulfilled your human lifespan. Your kids have better chances in becoming merfolk tho fortunately.

LinkSince your children have mer juices or whatever, they’ll have a pull to the sea and not as much to people. If they somehow in some way have their overwhelming innocence and carefree whimsy last until their teenage years they could prob become merfolk. Maybe meet grandpa if they aren’t sent to a lab just to get traumatized and lose their scales. Downside is they can’t see their parents much if at all anymore.
Idk fam I was gonna make everything more gruesome and darker but then I remembered I was a pg account. This might as well become cannon bc I haven’t thought about mer people until I was stuck in the shower today.

Only merfolk with royal blood can have both mer and human form and travel across land without losing their tails. Only the chosen heir find that out and go with their father to land and study humans because you can’t protect your homies from something you know nothing about. Crazy.

Anyway that extends to the human turned mer peeps, they keep their looks and age gracefully and don’t wrinkle very much until a lot later.

New lore from thin air
The royalty have such an ability from one of their ancient rulers asking the mother of the sea herself for a way to protect himself. He got stuck as a human on land, turned back in his old age after finding peace and ran (swam) for his life to summarize it.

LinkThe powers he got were to have both forms and be immune to the side effects of whatever depression the humans have going on.
Also probably magik trident powers or smth. Just know he has powers I’ll figure it out later. I added the Mother of the Sea part to attach them to main lore so I don’t forget about them.
(Mother of the Sea is the water element along with green hair over here which is the earth element.)

The ancient ruler had quite a few sons who inheritedthe abilities and made their own kingdoms or smth later on. Later down the line thousands of years later the future rulers of each kingdom still meet up to talk about water shenanigans. Don’t know.
There can be merfolk such as orca, clownfish, salmon, etc. etc. Sizes can vary.

I like to draw my mermaids pretty fish like, with blue and red ish skin depending on their scales and lots of fins :0 So this'll be a big transformation for me, but it's actually pretty cool. I always just believed that they could go on land anytime they want to unless they marry, then they're stuck human forever
That actually sounds pretty cool! I haven’t really thought of what the mermaid would look like so I instinctively went for the Disney version of them. Although your idea of them sound a lot more interesting tbh.
But for the lore I noticed in most stories about them that come out they’re almost always naive or bubbly and they are shy of humans. I kinda went with it and made up reasons why. Now I sorta like it. :D

I don't draw mermaids too often because it drives me insane trying to get the fish tail right but I wouldn't:t mind sketching one out to show you if you're interested. I've never drawn sirens before but they look different XD
I always thought it was fun how they're usually always bubbly it was kinda a fun quirk in my opinion
