That night Orchid simply decided not to head back to the camp, knowing that when battles were won there would be great amounts of Celebration. The noise would hurt her ears and she didn’t feel like heading into the crowd. Her paws made no sound as she trudged across the frosty forest floor, her ears flat against her head and fur fluffed up. “I did it. I got revenge but… why can’t I feel relived by it" She thought out loud and gave a sigh. She looked up at the dark grey clouds that blocked the moon and sky from her vision and narrowed her eyes. It just didn’t feel right. She was supposed to feel happy about killing the cat who took so much from her. She should feel free from the pressure. But she didn’t.

Another sigh escaped her jaws as she continued to pad through the forest, her nose searching for prey scents as her stomach began to claw at her belly in hunger. She caught the scent of a mouse and crouched quickly as she saw the creature standing on a flat slab of stone and nibbling a seed. Her eyes narrowed into slits as she crept forward, her belly fur brushing the ground. When she was hardly a fox-length away, she darted towards the mouse and leaped at it, landing directly on the small creature. Or so she thought as she watched it jump through her claws and scamper away. She gave a growl of annoyance and sat down on the cold stone, giving her ruffled fur a shake. She didn’t know what caught her attention but she looked up at the sky. Just as she did had the clouds began to shift. She narrowed her eyes against the bright moonlight that seeped through the dark clouded sky.

Orchid's eyes grew wide with awe as she noticed a few flowers that lay on the bottom of the slab slowly began to bloom, going from a shadowy grey to a beautiful royal blue that sparked color into the forest. The slab she sat on seemed to glow under her paws as the moonlight drove itself into it. The sight was nothing like Orchid had ever seen as she carefully backed off the slab. Her eyes caught a flash of fur above and she noticed a tuft of grey and white fur falling down onto the slab. She watched it silently and noticed that it carried something similar to a cat scent, except older, ancient nearly, faint, and less harsher on her nose. As the fur touched the stone was there a bright flash of white that forced Orchid to look away.

She slowly opened her eyes to see a tall cat with a long coat of grey and white fur standing among her. The sightless blue eyes locked gazes with her and her throat felt as if she swallowed thorns. For some reason she could not find the words to speak to this cat or force out hostility towards it. Suddenly it spoke, it words so clear and subtle to orchid’s ears. “Not all roses have thorns, unless they allow them to grow. The drought will kill the rose if it cannot adapt, beware of the rising sun that cuts through the sky. Follow the maple leaf that forever glides and the crow that never waits.” The words seemed almost ancient as Orchid listened in silent awe. The cat blinked slowly and narrowed its eyes “Orchid Of Torn White Roses, you must find your path with the help of those sent by the stars, or else your friendship will kill you.”

Orchid stared in confusion and looked down at her paws. Those sent the stars, Orchid Of Torn White Roses, a deadly friendship? What did all of this mean? She shook her head in frustration as all she felt was confusion. “Do not be troubled by confusion young one, you will understand soon enough” a voice whispered in her ears and she looked up to see that she was alone. She knew the cat she had just seen was real.

She stood there, thoughts racing. Those sent the stars, Orchid Of Torn White Roses, a deadly friendship? What did all of this mean? She shook her head in frustration as all she felt was confusion. “Do not be troubled by confusion young one, you will understand soon enough” the voice repeated into her ears and she looked up to see that she was alone. She knew the cat she had just seen was real, due to the faint lingering scent, but she also knew that can’t wasn’t alive. Her ears rung as she remembered the cats exact words. They echoed in her head as if it were a nightmare. She slumped down to the ground and gave a sigh of desperate confusion before looking up at the sky. The stars shined brightly from the one spot in the sky that the clouds had failed to recover.

She forced herself to stand and trudge away from the slab and into the forest, the confusion tiring her out as she stalked away towards the boundary that marked River-clan territory. She would answer any questions with the truth but for now she just wanted a warm nest to sleep in. End of chapter
