LinkThat night, their father seemed worried about something. He had been that way since talking with a friend of his. Finally, his son spoke up. “Is something wrong?” He sighed and said, “I’m afraid so. There’s rumour that-” he paused, “that the souls have crossed the river, and Agnar is with them.”
Hilda recognised the name; she had heard it in pieces of conversations she was not a part of. He was an evil man, one of the few who could use magic, and the leader of his dreaded army; the souls.

LinkShe never liked it when they talked about the enemy. It meant there wasn’t any of the usual storytelling and laughing. After they had eaten, she saw her brother go outside, so she went to join him. After some silence, she said, “I thought father said they would never cross the river. Does this mean they’ll attack us?” “They certainly could,” he replied. She looked at the other houses in the village; how peaceful they were. She couldn’t imagine that in a few days they could be gone. She looked at the stars, “Why can’t they just leave us alone?”
“Because things don’t work like that I’m afraid; and it’ll be a long time till they do. But this is far too much for a little one like you to carry. Don’t worry about it, alright?”
