The disobedience of adam and eve in the beginning, made it so that we were all doomed to everlasting death. There was no way we could go to heaven or any place like it, we would all die eventually and then be judged for an everlasting death. Their rejection of God's love and commandments damned us all. But God didn't create us so that He could just destroy us, He wanted us to have the ability to choose, to love Him willingly. He sent His only Son Jesus to die for our sins, which gave us a way to live eternally, but we have to make that choice of loving Him. If we love Him, obey the commandments He's put in place and repent from our sins, we will live eternally with Him, if we do not, however, we will be sent to everlasting torment, an eternal death.
