Dirk held John's hand, and squeezed it. "We both know I'm utter shit at coding. Illinois is probably the best option for you." John looked at Dirk, and smiled. "You said it when we first got together: this can't last forever." Dirk frowned. John was trying to hold it together, trying to force him to hold it together. "You don't have to pretend like this is okay." Dirk started to cry, and he hugged John tight. John froze for a moment, but he began to weep. He was a quiet crier, the only sounds you heard were his tears hitting the ground, but Dirk heard those a million fold. "I could stay in Washington! We could live in Vancouver like we always said we would!" Dirk pulled away from the hug, and held John's shoulders. "I could get a job at Apple tech, you could work with Jane, it would be perfect."

"Don't give up on your dreams just 'cause you love me." John grinned, and leaned in to kiss Dirk. He didn't stop smiling, he just leaned his face against Dirk's. Dirk wanted to pry open John's mouth, he wanted to lick his braces and tell him that he loved him, but he couldn't. He couldn't even move. "I love you..." Dirk whispered. "Shut up." John said. "Just shut up."
