My own opinion: I believe dreams are caused supernaturally, or can be a result of things that have, will, or are happening in your life. I think dreams and nightmares, lucid or not all have meaning, no matter how scary, childish, stupid, mystic, or serious they may be. I also think many dreams can show things that have happened in a past, or even future life. Feel free to put your own opinion on them in the comments!
