Buttercup is a quiet, gentle, sweet, and easily stressed tom. He is a caretaker just like Purple clove and Petal paws. Although this job is usually only for she eocats he prefers this job over patrols and smithing. Many on the path have speculated that Petal paws and Buttercup aren't in love. But these two make themselves happy so it doesn't matter. His mate" is Petal paws(ref attached) who is going to bearing his kits.

Petal paws is a sweet she eocat. She is currently going to bearing Buttercup's kits. Although buttercup doesn't seem very in love with her they both seem happy about the fact that they get to raise kits together. And as you suspected Buttercup(ref attached) is her mate.
