Heres a few tips
1. Lower the opacity of the color (for example, your skin color) after you have your skin color, then do the fat pencil thing and use that! the opacity works best between 0.01 and 0.14
2. Use a color DARKER than (example: your skin color) for the outline of your head. Or you can do something that matches where you are, for example in front of the sun would be a lighter outline.
3. When shading, don't shade with black. Your thing that you are shading might come out smoky or overshaded, and as we know, black is a very strong color.
