Having read this book certainly changed me, and sometimes made me nearly cry. It's a sad book filled with adventures, and most of the time terrible deaths, but truly an amazing series. Now let me tell u the saddest scenes.

The Fellowship of the Ring Bilbo Leaves For those of you that have read The Hobbit, and then read The Lord of the Rings, you'll know how sad it is to see our favorite little shy hobbit, Bilbo, go off on adventure once again. If this isn't sad enough, poor little Frodo comes running in, and asks where Bilbo is. Gandalf has to tell him he's gone.

The Fellowship of the Ring Farmer Maggot In the Lord of the Rings film franchise, Farmer Maggot's character is completely missed. It's a shame, too, because I nearly cried during that chapter. Frodo, as a young lad, stole mushrooms (hobbits favorite food) from Farmer Maggot. Farmer Maggot released his dogs out to chase Frodo, and ever since then, Frodo was afraid of him. But during the book, Frodo, Pippin and Sam all go to visit Farmer Maggot for some help. Frodo makes a good friend of Farmer Maggot, but instantly has to leave. It's a heartbreaking scene, followed by a comical experience: Mrs. Maggot gives Frodo a basket: Inside is fresh mushrooms :)

The Fellowship of the Ring Gil-Galad The story and fall of Gil galad is vaguely referenced when the elf Glorfindel comes and meets with the hobbits. The way the elves sing of Gil-Galad is truly heartbreaking. Short, but sad.

The Fellowship of the Ring Frodo forgets to say goodbye When leaving the house of Tom Bombadil, Frodo remembers: He forgot to say goodbye to Goldberry! The scene in which he mourns, missing her so much is heartbreaking, but it is more of a joyful tearing when she appears again and hugs Frodo goodbye.

The Fellowship of the RIng Frodo thinks about Bilbo During the scene where they are attacked on Weathertop by the barrow wights, Frodo is knocked down and while at his worst, he begins to think of his father, Bilbo. The scene shows how much Frodo loves his father, and how much he wants to be with him. It's so anticipated to see Frodo reunite with Bilbo once again.

The Fellowship of the Ring Frodo Reunites with Bilbo Bilbo is sitting in a corner, thinking, when Frodo walks in, searching for him. He doesn't realize it's Bilbo at first, but when it shows how it is him, it's so sad and amazing that you can't help feeling emotional.

The Fellowship of the Ring Aragorn sees the Argonath. When passing on the great river, Aragorn comes to the Argonath and at that moment, you see such a withered old ranger become a true king, amazing and elegant, and it foreshadows his return to the throne. Seeing Aragorn in another light is a moving scene, seeing how years of banishment the sons of Isildur have had, and the mere return for the moment.

The Fellowship of the Ring Death of Gandalf Gandalf faces Gothmog, or the Balrog, and is thrown down a chasm of fire on the bridge of Khazad-dum. They all get out of Moria and cry, a sad and terrible scene that is filled with emotion impactful. I nearly cried.

The Two Towers Aragorn finds Boromir After Boromir is killed by Uruk-hai arrows, Aragorn finds him and puts him to rest, kissing his brow and releasing him into the great river. It's a truly sad scene to see such a good character die.

The Two Towers Frodo's Mercy After finding Gollum, it's a moving scene to see Frodo give mercy to him after remembering the words of Gandalf long ago, about Bilbo and his mercy. Again, if you read The Hobbit and then read Lord of the Rings, you'll see how impactful this scene is, reenacting what happened long ago in the dark caves in the misty mountains.

The Two Towers Ent wives When Treebeard, or Fangorn, sings the song about the Ent wives, before they all left. It's sad to see that happen, them singing about the times before all went dark.

The Two Towers The March of the Mighty When the trees in the forest all march together, singing about how they will destroy Isengard for there injustice. The scene isn't sad, but it's so great and amazing it is enough to make you cry. I sang the Isengard March song over and over again afterwards. Even know, it's my favorite song put in the book.

The Two Towers The Invasion of Isengard After the invasion of Isengard, it is amazing to see Pippin and Merry in the midst of it all, smoking Saruman's tobacco. It's hilarious, and enough to make you cry out in joy. All of Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli's search was not in vain.

The Two Towers Frodo and Sam talk about their place in a story Frodo and Sam talk about who they'd be in a journey. It's a wonderful time how, during the worst period in their life, they can talk like old friends. It's just overall super emotional and a beautiful time.

Sam runs over to him after getting Shelob back in her place, and starts to cry out: "No Mr. Frodo! No, don't go somewhere where I can't follow!" The words 'don't go somewhere where I can't follow" are super SUPER emotional. just- yes.

The Return of the King A song in the dark When Sam realizes his dear Frodo is still alive, he climbs to the very top of a tower in search for him. Then, he begins to sing. In the dark, he hears a voice respond. The voice is Frodo, singing along with him. Imagine that: In the darkness of Mordor, a voice in the darkness begins to sing, and another one joins him. Frodo gets whipped by an Orc for singing, but that short moment was very emotional.

The Return of the King Denethor tells Faramir some ****ed up shit Denethor literally tells Faramir that he'd rather him be dead, and Boromir be alive. Faramir says nothing whatsoever, and goes off to fight for Minas Tirith. The scene alone is just so depressing, seeing Faramir, so great of a person, get rebuked by his own FATHER, saying that his brother is better. Damn, Denethor.

The Return of the King Denethor tries to burn Faramir Alive as Pippin watches. Denethor thinks Faramir is dead, and is going to burn him. The Return of the King Beregond fights for Faramir I hate how the film franchise of LORD OF THE RINGS leaves out the amazing character Beregond. The Return of the King Denethor commits suicide by burning himself alive Later, I might make an anim explaining the psychology of Denethor, so I'll keep this short: Denethor wanted to die with Faramir, because he'd rather die WITH his son, rather than without him, but Faramir is saved by Gandalf, and Denethor is locked in the room while burning to death, screaming in pain.

The Return of the King Theoden is Killed by the Witch-King Angmar, Lord of the Nazgul. Theoden, no doubt, was a badass king of Rohan, and by far the coolest character in the book. So it was awfully sad when he's killed in battle by the Nazgul. His own faithful servant, Eowyn, watches.

The Return of the King Eowyn kills the Nazgul After watching her king die, Eowyn faces the Nazgul king. He tells her 'no man can defeat me' and she unmasks herself proclaiming: 'I am no man' and stabs the dreading king of Nazgul in the face, killing him while the hobbit Pippin watches in amazement. It's such an amazing thing to see Tolkien write a scene for women all around the world to rejoice, especially the fact that it was before women had their own stand. Inspiring.

The Return of the King Pippin carries Merry up the steps after the battle, and agrees with Denethor. After being nearly killed in battle, Pippin finds Merry and has to carry him for help, screaming for help and eventually giving up. He realizes, Denethor wasn't wrong: Why die without someone you love, when you can die with them. Pippin wished he could die with Merry. It is the most depressing and sad scene that was ****ING LEFT OUT OF THE MOVIES. I nearly cried when I read it.

The Return of the King Sam breaks Gollum's arm. Sam's arm, in which his sword is held, in being grasped be Gollum. Using his other arm, Sam slams down his wrist on Gollum's long grasping arm, thus cracking it. Gollum runs off and hides. The scene is just gross. I nearly gagged and threw up, but I believe it had a special place in this list: Hobbits aren't that warlike, but Sam loved Frodo so much he nearly killed Gollum.

The Return of the King Sam Carries Frodo up Orodruin It's such an emotional scene when Frodo nearly passes out, and thinks about the Shire all the way in that dreading land. Then, he claims he forgets the taste of water. It's so sad to see Frodo go through that pain, but Sam, who is just as weary, picks up Frodo, saying: "I can't carry the ring for you, Frodo, but I can carry you!" I carries him up the mountain.

The Return of the King Frodo keeps the Ring This scene was the most heartbreaking, impactful and emotional seen throughout the entire book. It pisses me off reading it, too, because Sam went through all the pain of giving his food to Frodo, carrying Frodo, taking care of Frodo, and travelling, forgetting his own self for the sake of Frodo. And when it comes to the last point, after all the terrible adventures they have, and Sam tells Frodo to throw the ring in the fire, Frodo looks at sam and says: "No." I literally had to stop reading. I couldn't finish after this point because I had to let it sink in. If you read the book, be prepared for that part. If I ever read it again, I'm gonna ****ing cry.

The Return of the King Smeagol Reunites with the Ring This is such an intense scene that I can't even comprehend it to this day: It all starts with Gollum getting the ring, and Bilbo taking it. Gollum's entire life is bent on finding the ring once again. Throughout the book, you might feel BAD that Gollum, the wretched pitiful creature, doesn't have his precious. But at the very end, Gollum takes the ring and is shoved in the fire. He takes it once again. Gollum ends the ring by getting it again. Much like Denethor and Faramir, Gollum dies with his precious.

The Return of the King The Waking of Sam After all the days in pain, Sam finally awakes. He is no longer in Orodruin. No pain. Nothing. He's back where Faramir left him. And a single thought crossed his mind: "Oh, that all must have just been a dream. I'm back in the same place." I got so pissed off. Imagine if he thought ALL THAT ****ING PAIN WAS A DREAM- I just- why. But then he realizes it's not. He's with Gandalf, Merry, Pippin, Aragor, Legolas, Gimli, Faramir, Beregond, everyone! It's amazing.

The Return of the King The Bonfire Finally, all of them reunite with each other. Aragorn is king of Gondor, He's married to Arwen, and everyone in the entire main story are all together, talking and chatting in the night, telling their stories of what happened. The Return of the King Bilbo asks about the ring "...Speaking of which, where is that ring of yours? I should like to see it again" Bilbo had said. And Frodo responded with: "It's gone, Bilbo dear. I lost it." It's such a sad scene because Bilbo has no idea what the **** happened with the ring, and Frodo isn't gonna tell him the truth. Instead of bragging about his grand adventure, Frodo just tells him he lost it. Amazing.
