the host secretly operates the timelines, or what appear to be. in reality all these characters are codes in some crashed computer, digitally created ai's meant to act like an arcade. that's where the various stories are. the computer crashed at some point and the motherboard, main code, or as personified, the host, is trying to eliminate the threats to the malware.
the host, being attacked by the crash as well, mistakes the game characters for the virus'. and is henceforth set out to test and delete them.
