Okay so like a while ago I was watching a tiktok compilation and there was this one video where a girl and a guy were driving and there was a dog on the road and the girl went out and brought the dog inside the car and said something like 'I'm gonna keep it' and I read comments about that part and there were people saying 'What was she thinking? That dog literally has a collar!' 'She can't just take a random dog off the street lmao' and I agree with them, but then I saw comments like 'That girl has no respect for animals! She literally said 'I'm gonna keep **IT**' and then the replies were like 'yea she's saying it like the dogs an object'and then people were saying how she was suppose to say 'I'm gonna adopt THEM.' like what are you suppose to use they/them for dogs or other animals now? I mean, I guess it's fine but how is referring to animals as IT equal not having respect for them? Sorry but I ain't never seen someone say 'Aw look at that dog, they're so cute'

An animal is referred as “it” unless the relationship is personal (like a pet that has a name). Then it's OK to use “he” or “she" when referring to the animal.

It is not generally considered appropriate for humans. We use he, she, etc. It implies that the human in question is an object, or has no gender (which is generally considered offensive). As far as animals go, it and its are fine.
