The head is turned, but I probably got the angle wrong so it's not easy to see. The lifespan varies based on living circumstances. It's preferable and most suitable habitat is underwater cliffs; since it's deep enough so they won't be easily hunted and they can attract creatures as food from the bio-luminescent lines on their masks. This is where they gather in large groups and live the longest as long as they don't die from a sickness or large net trapping them. (Even though they don't need to breath the net would limit their ability to move and if they're not aided by other Mergons they may eventually die of starvation.)
