“I’m okay.” That’s what Hailey Newgreen kept telling herself. She walked down the street trying to stay warm in the coldest winter she had ever experienced. This was the same day she finally gained the courage to abandon her alcoholic and abusive parents. Now she aimlessly wandered the streets of small, crime-ridden Chicago. “I’m okay. I’ll be okay.” This is what she tried to tell herself, but deep down she knew it wasn’t true. The only family she had were her parents. Her grandparents had all died long before she was born, and she had no aunts or uncles to begin with. She walked in silence for awhile trying to process what she had done just a few hours ago, and what her parents are thinking about it. “They’re probably too trashed to even notice,” She thought.

She walked for a bit longer until she heard something in the usually calm street ahead. She cautiously approached, and slowly became less tense as she found out what was making the sound. It was only a band performing in the town square. It was a two man band with one singing and one on the keyboard. She had never seen them before, but she liked how they sounded. She sat on a bench in the back corner hidden from sight so she could listen. The man on the keyboard was mesmerizing to watch. He could play perfectly without even looking at the instrument. He made it look effortless. What Hailey could gather was that they were called “Happy and the Moonshine” She was only half paying attention until their final song. She had never heard it, but the lyrics spoke to her. It was called Still Breathing. Even though the song hadn’t ended, Hailey reluctantly left the crowd before anyone would notice. She needed to figure out where she would sleep for the night.

She knew she wouldn’t be able to sleep in the streets, especially not in a place like Chicago, so she set out to find a place by the woods. She walked around for about a half hour until she finally settled on a patch of grass under a large redwood. The sun was just beginning to set so Hailey assumed it was around 4:30pm. She was about to sit down but her stomach started growling. She looked on for a few moments and began to walk deeper into the woods in search for food. It was going to get dark soon so she could only hope there was something to eat in the outskirts of the forest. She walked for what in reality was just about 10 minutes, but to Hailey seemed like hours. Just as she was about to turn back and go to sleep hungry, with the last bit of light in the day she saw a tree in the distance, with semi-ripe apples growing on it's branches, probably left from Fall.

She was getting tired, but she was hungry so she ran over and picked some before making her way back to her resting area. They weren’t the best, but she ate 3 of the 30 or so apples she had picked and layed on the hard ground, trying to at least get a little shuteye. After about 3 hours, that song popped into her mind. Still Breathing. She could only think of the lyric, “I’m like soldier coming home for the first time, dodged a bullet and I walked across a landmine.” Hailey just cried all that night. She fell asleep at around sunrise, and was almost instantly woken up by the sound of a man.

Once she was finally fully awake, the man introduced himself as Officer Hopper. He said he was taking her to an orphanage and brought her to his police car. He helped her into the back seat and started driving. It was about 10 minutes into the drive when Hailey finally asked,”What orphanage are you taking me to?” Hopper replied, “Woodville, why?” Hailey didn’t respond, she just breathed a sigh of relief. There were a few minutes of silence, and then Hopper turned on the radio. It was another song that described Hailey’s life flawlessly. “What song is this?” She asked. Hopper replied with, “I’m pretty sure it’s Pain by Three Days Grace, why do you ask?” Again, no reply from Hailey. She was already lost in the lyrics of the song. The rest of the ride was only the sound of the music. When they pulled into the orphanage parking lot, there was a woman waiting for them outside. She looked mean, like she killed puppies for entertainment. Hailey got out of the warm car and stepped into the f

The lady said to address her as only Madam Greenwood and escorted Hailey inside. She gave her a quick tour of the building and went off to do some errands. Hailey sat down on the couch and began to read a book, but then a boy came and sat next to her. “Hi, my name is Maxwell.” He said, in a kind of shy way. “Do you want to be friends?” Hailey was quick to say yes, since she had no one else. She introduced herself and the two began talking about their pasts. Maxwell’s parents had been police officers. They were shot dead in a drug bust, and the only family Maxwell had was in Russia. He was given the choice to travel there and be put in the care of his aunt and uncle, but decided against it because they were very poor and he knew they wouldn’t be able to support him along with themselves. Hailey also found out it was Maxwell’s first day at the orphanage as well.

They ended up conversing for the entire day, and before the knew it, Madam Greenwood was calling the children to bed. It was only 5pm. Hailey and Maxwell were scared of Madam Greenwood so they didn’t argue. They didn’t have rooms yet, so they were instructed to stay back in the living area. After all the kids were in their respective rooms, Madam Greenwood turned to Maxwell and Hailey and asked them, “Are you two okay with being roommates?” She said it was because they didn’t have many rooms left at the orphanage. Since they had already become friends, Hailey and Maxwell agreed. They were brought to their room: a small, cozy area with two beds on opposite sides. They both had white sheets and pillows with red blankets. There was a bedside table next to both with just an alarm clock and a lamp.

There was a dresser at the foot of each bed with just 3 outfits, one being a matching pajama set and the other two being identical: black pants and a grey shirt. Hailey and Maxwell changed into their pajamas, with Hailey changing in the bathroom down the hall. They lied down in their beds and just as they were about to go to sleep, Maxwell whispered, “Hey, by the way, you can call me Max.” Hailey nodded and they quickly drifted to sleep. The next day, a Monday, they were woken by their synchronized alarms at the early hour of 5:00 in the morning. They could hear every alarm throughout the building making the same obnoxious sound, along with the groaning of children who just wanted a few extra hours of rest. They got out of their beds, changed their clothes, and ambled out to the living area. Madam Greenwood was already waiting there holding a clipboard and a pen.

As she scanned over the paper on her clipboard, none of the children dared to speak. After a few seconds, she announced the children’s jobs for the week. The final names she announced were Maxwell Harrow and Hailey Newgreen. They would be cleaning up after everybody. They would also have to stay up after everyone else went to sleep to clean the living area and kitchen. After everyone knew their jobs, Madam Greenwood said in her angry, miserable tone, “Alright, it’s almost breakfast time so go sit at the table. Except the cooks, you go make some eggs and pancakes for everyone.” Two girls named Mary and Katrina walked to the kitchen while everyone else went to the dining room and sat down in their friend groups. Everyone started talking to each other about various topics. There was silence between Max and Hailey for a few minutes until Max whispered, “Can you believe how early we have to wake up?” Hailey replied, “I know! And lucky us, we get to stay up even later at night!”

Everyone kept talking until Mary and Katrina walked in the dining room holding rusty platters with pancakes and scrambled eggs. Mary put a pancake on everyone’s plate as Katrina put a scoop of scrambled eggs. The children passed around the maple syrup and began to eat. Nobody spoke because there was a rumor that Madam Greenwood eavesdropped during meals and would punish kids who spoke ill of her or the orphanage. No one really believed it, but no one risked it either. It went on like this for just about 2 years, with no one even considering adopting from Woodville Orphanage. Hailey and Max stayed best friends, and they really didn’t talk with any of the other kids. It was a normal day, the same as the past 2 years the kids had spent at the orphanage.

Hailey and Max woke up to their alarms and all the children gathered at the living area. Something was different. Madam Greenwood was smiling. It wasn’t a happy smile though, it was more of an “I’m making an attempt to seem excited” smile. Instead of starting the day with her usual shout at the kids to get in their places for breakfast, she said, “Alright kids, I’ve got some good news for two of you. There’s a couple coming to adopt. They’ll adopt ONLY two of you.”

Immediately, the children broke into conversation. “I wonder who it will be!” “I hope it’s me and you!!” and things like that. Before they could say anything else, Madam Greenwood shushed them and said they were skipping breakfast. Everyone went to the living area and started talking. Hailey and Max were looking through a book together while everyone else was just jumping around and having fun. Max and Hailey were outcasts, mostly because they were both introverted. Everyone stopped in their tracks when the sound of a door opening was heard.

Two men walked into the living area and started looking around at the children, trying not to disturb them too much. One man had black hair and the other had blonde hair. They were both fairly tall and wearing suits. The black haired man whispered something to the other, and then he walked over to Hailey. “Hi there! Is it alright if we uh, adopt you?” Hailey looked over at Max, and he nodded to her. She said, “Ok, just give me a minute.” She looked at Max and he looked like he was trying to hold back tears. “Max, I don’t have to go.” She told him. “No, it’s alright. I’m sure I’ll find some new friends.” He replied, and quickly looked back at the book he and Hailey had been reading.

Hailey walked over to the men and said, “Okay, I’m ready to go.” The men looked confused, and the blonde one said, “Did your caretaker not tell you we were adopting two children?” Hailey’s face lit up, and she said, “Really?” The men were confused as to why she was so excited. Hailey lowered her voice to a whisper and said, “Can you please adopt Maxwell?” She looked at Max and one of the men said, “Well, why not. Might as well give you someone you’re friends with as a sibling.” Hailey ran over to Max and told him he was getting adopted too. They hugged each other, and they walked back to the men, trying to hide their excitement.

They all walked out the door and their new fathers helped Hailey and Max into the backseat of a grey Subaru. It was silent for a while, so the man with black hair said, “Well, since we’re both your fathers, we want you to call me Papa, since I’m partly Spanish, and him Dad. Both children agreed, and Hailey asked if they could play music. Papa pulled out a cell phone and said, “Sure, any song in mind?” Hailey said, “Yeah, can you play Pain by Three Days Grace? Papa put on the song and then all four members of the family switched off choosing the song. Hailey and Max were so excited to see where they would be living they could barely contain themselves the whole ride. As soon as they pulled in the driveway, Hailey and Max practically jumped out of the car and ran to the house. They waited for Papa and Dad to come unlock the door. As soon as they did, Hailey and Max ran into the house waiting for their parents to show them their rooms.

They followed Papa to the hall while Dad was making lunch. There were two kids’ rooms right across the hall from each other. Max’s room was blue and grey and Hailey’s was purple and white. Papa said they could look around their rooms for a bit but they were hungry so they followed him into the kitchen and sat at the table. They ate the best BLTs either of them had ever tasted. Dad said he used a secret ingredient, but wouldn’t tell them what it was. Hailey and Max loved their new life here already. That is, until the neighbors came. It was shortly after lunch that there was a knock at the door. “Oh, must be those dang McHenry folks.” groaned dad. “Who are they?” Hailey asked. “Oh, the McHenry family. They’ve been feuding with us for years. Ever since we got together they’ve hated our guts. Must be angry we’ve got new members to the family.”

Hailey was confused as to how anyone could hate people so nice like Dad and Papa. “But why?” she asked. That was when Papa cut in. “Well some people can’t wrap their heads around the fact that it’s the future and men can date each other too. Those McHenry’s are the reason we haven’t married. They’d be too much in our business to even buy a ring without getting questioned like they’re cops or somethin’.” Max had been listening in and finally said “Well, you can still be happy though, right?” Dad nodded sincerely and looked at the clock. It was almost 9 so Hailey and Max were sent to bed. Papa and Dad talked for a while about things like whether to send Hailey and Max to school right away and other things about their children’s lives. They decided they would let the kids get used to their lives here in Naperville before sending them to school.

Hailey and Max could hear their fathers’ conversation and both breathed a sigh of relief when they found out they weren’t going to school just yet. Max joined Hailey in her room, trying to be quiet, since it was closer to the kitchen where Dad and Papa were conversing. They talked for awhile about things that weren’t particularly interesting to Max and Hailey. That is, until they started talking about Max and Hailey again. They talked about the school they would be going to, Jefferson Junior High School. Papa and Dad had also went to that school, and they said it was the best school either of them had ever been to. Once they started talking about the school, they just talked about friends they had and other things of no interest to Hailey or Max.

That’s when Max went to his own room so they could both go to bed since it was almost midnight already. Hailey had a hard time falling asleep though. Maybe it was because she was in a new home. Or maybe it was because she wasn’t used to the complete silence at night. Back at the orphanage she always heard the chatter of children who just weren’t ready to sleep yet. Max was already asleep but Hailey was more awake than ever. She had so many thoughts racing in her head. What if her new parents would turn out to be abusive too? What if this is worse than the orphanage? She knew the thoughts couldn’t really be true, but she couldn’t convince herself of that. She just layed there.

Hailey was still awake at 3am. She was just laying there, not moving. Soon she had to use the bathroom, so she got up trying to remember where Papa said it was. Well, she tried. It felt like something was pushing on her chest and holding her down. She couldn’t move. Hailey felt trapped. She closed her eyes begging herself to wake up. It felt like she was floating above her immobile body. Once she opened her eyes she expected it to be a dream, but she saw someone- or something sitting on her chest. All it was was a silhouette of a woman. A tall, thin woman, just like her mother was. Hailey tried to scream but nothing came out. Now she could barely breathe. She prepared herself to die, but just then whatever was holding her down vanished. She was terrified, but tried to block it in her mind and finally got a few hours of sleep. She tried to convince herself it was a dream, but she could still feel pain in her chest, like it had pounds and pounds of weight on it.

When she woke up the next morning, she looked in the mirror. Nothing. She still had trouble breathing but tried her best to hide it. She was sure people noticed, but no one ever said anything. She was glad she didn’t have to explain what happened last night and be called crazy. She knew it was real though, and that’s all that mattered to her. She knew it was real, and she was scared. Hailey was contemplating telling Max what happened. Would he even believe her? Would he do that laugh he does when he knows you’re lying? Hailey knew him too well. She decided not to tell him. She felt like she had to tell someone, but she didn’t know who to tell. She was just confused. She decided to tell one of her parents, but she didn’t know who. She decided to tell Papa since he seemed more like he would take it seriously. Papa was at work, though. Hailey went to her room and just sat on her bed trying to figure out just what to say.

They didn’t tell their dads, but both Hailey and Max like Papa better than Dad. Dad didn’t really take things as seriously as Papa did. It seemed like sometimes Dad forgot that Hailey and Max didn’t know what a real home was meant to be like. Papa was patient with them. Like he had experienced this before. He understood how hard it was for the kids to change their lives so quickly like this. Max came into Hailey’s room after a few minutes and told her breakfast was ready. Dad was definitely a better cook than Papa. They had amazing blueberry waffles and both ate 3 helpings. “Wow Dad! This is amazing!” Max half-said through a mouthful of waffle and syrup. Dad replied with, “Oh, really? I don’t cook much. Glad you like it!” Hailey was surprised. “This is so good! Why don’t you cook?” Dad told them it was because he never really had time anymore.

After breakfast, Hailey went back to her room and just thought. She contemplated if she was just being paranoid. But her experience was just too real for her to tell herself that and really believe it. She tried to shake the thought of anything involving what she called “the incident.” At least until Papa got home from work at 7:00. As soon as he got home, Hailey ran up to him and asked to talk to him. He was busy. Papa was never busy, but of course now of all times he was. Tears welled up in Hailey’s eyes and that was enough to get Papa to talk to her.

He followed her to her room and they sat down on her bed. “What’s up, Hailey?” Papa asked. Hailey tried to find the right words but nothing could describe what was going through her head. Everything she wanted to say sounded crazy, so she just mumbled, “Oh, um, nevermind.” Papa knew better. “Come on, you had to want something.” he replied. After some coaxing, Hailey told him “Well, something happened. Last night I couldn’t sleep, and I tried to get up to go to the bathroom. I couldn’t.” She was near crying at this point, but Papa wanted to hear more. “What do you mean, Hailey?” He asked her. She continued, “Well I saw a woman. She was standing over me, holding me down. I felt so helpless. ” Hailey burst into tears despite how hard she was trying not to cry. Papa hugged her tight. “It’s okay. You’ll be alright.” he consoled her. But Hailey didn't feel alright.

That night, Hailey didn’t sleep. It happened again. But this time it was different. It wasn’t the same woman. No, it was a man. A tall but broad man. Just like her father. Her old father. The one she left because he abused her. Hailey was scared and alone. She couldn’t even move her head this time. She was completely immobile. She tried so hard to scream that it hurt her throat.
