It appears as though the girls soul/heart is fueling the shadow. Perhaps it is a projection of all her unkind thoughts, distantes, and general bad thoughts? Perhaps the turmoil she has gone through has created him. (Sorry lol just made a conspiracy)
No actually it's more like the monster wants to eat her soul and whenever it's thy bright red it means in his grasp and he's about to take it

idk but when I named it I had the red death from edgar allen poe in mind, (we were reading it in english dont judge :P)
